In my opinion, it is easier to optimise a site for a specific local area than it is to compete against companies on a national scale. I work with many businesses local to Bournemouth but have recently been updating www.groveservices.co.uk a Health and Safety Services company based in London.
Simply including paragraphs within the website which indicate to visitors and to the search engines that the company is based in London and operates throughout the South (Essex, Surrey, Sussex and Herts) will help to boost the rankings within Google, Bing and Yahoo.
Making the telephone number searchable too is another trick as is making sure the company address and postcode are included.

Meta tags, particularly page title and description, can also be used as they are often the first indicator to customers as to where the company is based.

I have worked on several websites which are not intended to be public - such as to hold photographs and details for a holiday home. The sites are not listed within the search engines but links to the sites are emailed from the holiday home owner to the friends, family and colleagues who may be renting the villa. Much easier than re-writing all those emails or sending several attachments and photos.

I set up holiday home sites using a content managed system such as WordPress so the owners can update the site themselves with new details, photos, reviews and other information.

Some holiday home owners have tried to set up their own sites but then find they hit problems understanding how to structure the website or how to pull together the reams of information they have accumulated over the years - this is where I can add value.

Website maintenance is becoming the major part of my work these days.

Is it due to the current economic climate where less new start-ups are taking the plunge but existing companies are keen to maximise the potential of their website?

or is it because I started working with many of my clients 4-6 years ago?

If you have a brochure website, it can be costly to pay for updates and maintenance on the site. If you want to set up a Facebook page (for free) the updates you make on the Facebook page can easily be integrated into your website, e.g. in a Facebook Like Box on one of your webpages, which would cost £25 to add to your site.
Similarly, Blogger can be used and integrated within your site if you want to create articles or post blogs on a regular basis. This is usually £50 to adapt the design to match your website.
These are low cost ways in which you can then start to manage the content of your existing website without having to pay for a full content managed system - usually priced at around £400.

Many small businesses start with a brochure website, maybe developed by a friend or relative, but in order to make it work for your business, you need to think about the SEO and marketing elements of the site too. I am often asked to review sites and suggest improvements.

Marshall Landscapes website needed some maintenance and SEO work. Targetting keywords such as landscaping and garden design, together with the geographical area of Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, I recently updated the content on the site to help improve rankings within the search engines. There were also some code changes required to bring the site in line with W3C standards and speed up the page download times. A recent small project of mine was to develop a website promoting a beautiful country house in France. http://www.lespommiers.co.uk/

The client had bought his own domain which came complete with a web builder package. Using the tools available to the client, I designed and built a simple site showing photographs and details of the property. The client is now able to update the site themselves not only to change the text and add photos but also to show when the property is availabe to rent. He even sent this feedback about the training notes.

Individuality Swimming in Google Maps

A client, Individuality Swimming and Fitness, recently asked how they could be registered in Google Maps (aka Google Places) to show the areas in which they operate, not specifically the business address.

Google Places allows you to register a business for free and write up relevant details, but if you are home based or the business address is not particularly relevant to your business as you offer a service at clients homes or from different premises, then you can indicate a service area for your business and it will display much like the screenshot below.

You only get one chance to make a first impression and on the web you only get about 6 seconds! A small business Web site is a single chance you have to grab visitors' attention, tell them that you have the products or services they want and turn it into a sale or at least an online contact.

Here is a quick checklist to make sure you have the right content on the home page of your website.

The general rule is to create the web design around the content.

Include the company name and logo
Include your contact details
Ensure navigation around the site is clear
Remember a 'Call to action' - what do you want the visitor to do now?
Use the appropriate language style to portray your business, e.g. Contact Us vs. Get in touch and use of ‘we’ or ‘I’
What services / products are on offer?
What is the usp / value add?
Does the website reflect the company personality / aims / core values?
Does it need a bio or examples of key clients?
Where is the company based / what area does it serve?

Images, graphics, pictures for your website

It is difficult to decide on the right images for your website and not fall into the trap of 'predictable'. Not all images on your site need to be photographs. There is a trend towards hand drawn imagery this year, but maybe you feel that does not portray a professional image for your company. Another very simple idea is WordArt. The colour scheme has changed slightly to reflect a calmer, less harsh side in keeping with the relaxing and therapeutic massages that Carmen offers.
The width of the site has changed to fit with more and more people using higher screen resolutions and larger monitors.
New treatments such as Ayurvedic Facelift Facial Massage have been added with an easy to navigate drop down menu.
A new SHOP page has been added to promote books and products which customers can buy from Amazon.
Customers can also buy gift vouchers online using PayPals secure and easy checkout.
The site connects to Carmen's page on Linked In
...and Carmen has a page to collect customer feedback and reviews through her Blogger page.

Simple ways to improve your website

La Dolce Vita offers massage and beauty treatments in Swanage. My client wanted to improve her website ranking for 'beauty treatments'. The site was already performing well against search terms such as 'massage treatments in Swanage' but to boost the performance against similar search terms e.g. 'beauty treatments in Swanage', I made 3 simple changes on the website.

The treatments page previously contained all information about massage and beauty treatments, this was split into two separate pages; one for massage and the other for beauty. This means both pages can be optimised for the relevant keywords.
The titles and content were boosted with additional keywords, e.g. Facials tailor made for your skin type. A pleasurable beauty treatment...
The design of the site was made wider. This is possible as trends show that the majority of people use screens which are now wider than 1024px. La Dolce Vita had been designed some years ago for 800px screens. A wider screen means the customer can see more information before scrolling.

La Dolce Vita has first page ranking across the major search engines for most of the keywords we targetted.

Domestic Angels is moving

www.domestic-angels.com who offer cleaning services across Bournemouth have moved their website.
There are two key reasons why I advised them to change their web host provider.
1) Cost. This year the total cost will remain the same as there is a one-off transfer fee to move the site and email but going forward they will save over 50% web hosting costs per year.
2) Lack of support. Working with Domestic Angels, we found the support offered by the hosting company over email issues was very slow and not very helpful. I prefer to work with a web host company that offers instant telephone or Live Chat support.
I am working with another client to plan the transfer of their website and email as they have experienced too much downtime with their web hosting company.

Don't get confused and think a domain name is technical - it is really just a sign post pointing people to your website - otherwise you would have to tell them to access 92.10.33.49 or some other string of code.

Clever domain names include a keyword, e.g. www.bournemouthmassage.co.uk

Or you can buy a domain name just to point to a specific page on your site, e.g. www.southbournefastandflat.info which is obviously much easier than telling them to go to http://www.fsk.org.uk/Events/ComingSoon/SouthbourneFastandFlat10K5KRun/tabid/328/Default.aspx

Domain names seems to be getting longer and more complicated but I advise my clients to use capital letters, colours, bold or italics to help customers read the domain name so it is easier to remember.

Search Engine Optimisation Work

I have recently improved the content of www.relaxretreat.co.uk to improve its ranking within the search engines. The results have been good. Across the three major search engines if you search for beauty treatments, massage treatments or pampering in Swanage, the Purbecks, Studland etc then this site will appear within the top 5.

If the search term is more generic such as spa days in Dorset then the site does not rank within the top 30, but if the keywords are clearer such as spa treatment in Purbecks then the site will show at number 1. Similarly if you use much more specific terms such as Indian Head Massage in Studland, then the site is again top of the list.

Focus on your chosen keywords. This is one of the key factors for good ranking within organic searches (i.e. not the sponsored listings). General terms can be vague and will often come up against a lot of competition for placement in the search engines.

Bournemouth will be celebrating its bicentennial in 2010. Next year marks the 200th anniversary of the official founding of the town. The e-commerce site was built using ZenCart and customised to fit the customer's requirements. The site has a SSL (secure sockets layer) to help protect customers information sent via the web and uses PayPal for payment processing. The pictures are available in 3 sizes and categorised according to area or key landmarks and the era in which they were taken. The search facility within the site also allows you to look specifically for keywords such as transport or fashion. Close ups of the photographs are shown using a lightbox effect.

Their website launches today. There are some great photos which make the site very appealing. On the home page the photos are displayed as a slideshow and within the photo galleries they can be viewed close up using a "lightbox".

This site was built using WordPress which provides the client with a content managed system so he can update the content of the site and add new photos to the gallery keeping the maintenance costs of the website manageable.

Internet Browsers

I was astonished to read that Internet Explorer and Firefox had an equal share of the market when it came to browsers used on the internet. I tried to verify these statistics and came across another set of figures which showed that IE (Internet Explorer) is the more popular web browser with a 68% share of the market and Firefox accounts for 21%.

Whichever version is the more realistic, it clearly shows that your website must be tested across different internet browsers to ensure it displays and functions correctly. Otherwise, you will lose potential customers.

Other internet browsers worth a mention here are Safari, Chrome and Opera which account for about 10% of the market between them.

If you have built your own website or have an older site, it may not be viewable in all web browsers and you could be losing customers.

Should I Display an Email Address on My Site or Use a Contact Form?

I would add to this.
When I include an email address on a website, I do so using code which makes it harder for spammers to harvest the email address.

The inconvenience of not receiving all the relevant information from a customer when they send you an email (e.g. they forget to include a contact telephone number) is, in my opinion, much better than the problems which are often encountered with contact forms.

A contact form sometimes just stops working....but you don't realise until a customer actually tells you...how many other customers were lost as they just clicked away onto another site?
Your webhost may change parameters on the server to limit spam mail, but this may result in you receiving some but not all of the enquiries via your contact form. How can you check this...only by regularly sending yourself half a dozen test enquiries from your website and making sure you receive them all.
Internet "bots" can hijack contact forms which are not well protected, they then use them to send spam emails to others....but it looks like it is coming from your site. You could get blacklisted. Again, you often have no idea that it is even happening.
Internet "bots" can send spam to you via a contact form on your site which does not have proper validation on all the content entered.

My advice is to use contact forms when you need to collect specific information from potential customers but be aware of the problems I have mentioned above.

Joining an Associate Scheme

There are so many affiliate and associate schemes on the internet but it may be worth your while to consider using them to earn a little extra.

For example, Amazon have an associate scheme where you can sell their products via your website and earn some commission.

I have created a "bookshelf" within my website which advertises Amazon books and they would process the orders, check the payments and dispatch the products. Your website acts as an advertisement for them but to the customer this is a seamless process.

From the customer perspective, they are still within your website, have looked at products which you have either recommended or which are tailored to the typical audience for your site. If they click through from your site and purchase an item, you will be awarded up to 10% commission on that item.

Domain names

What's in a name?

Did you spend a long time on a name for your business? If so, you should consider the domain name for your business too?

I prefer domain names that do not include hyphens "-" or full stops "." these can be so easy to overlook when you are typing in your web browser.

Some domain names can seem too long-winded e.g. http://www.individualityswimmingandfitness.co.uk/ which is a client of mine. But stop and think for a minute. Individuality is the business name but it makes sense to include the swimming and fitness part to claify the purpose of the business.

Although people are likely to mis-spell this domain name if they have to type the full address, this website ranks well in the search engines so is often found that way. One of the reasons it ranks well in the search engines is because the key words are used in the domain name. Similarly with another client of mine http://www.wirralflooringandcarpets.co.uk/

My domain name on the other hand is short and easy to remember http://www.gtilley.co.uk/ but hindsight is a wonderful thing and if I was starting out again I would choose differently. In fact, try entering http://www.webdesignbygaynortilley.co.uk/ into your browser and you will see that it redirects you to my site. That's right - you can buy more than one domain name and have them all redirected to your website.

Some people advise using colours as part of your business name as they are easily remembered. I would say, try out a few names on your friends and family first to see if your business name really does conjure up the right picture in people's minds. Do you ever test you own website?

Taking a little time to do so could prove to be very valuable.

One of my clients recently tested the contact form on his website only to find that he received only 1 in 6 of the test enquiries - the others were classed as "spam mail" by his web host. A few tweaks to the script soon ensured all enquiries were forwarded to him directly.

I hasten to add this was not a site I originally built, but rather one that I regularly update for the client.

The oringal site was built 7 years ago and the contact form has not been changed since then. However, the increase of spam mail in recent years meant that the web host had changed the parameters by which they determined what was considered spam mail and should be ignored. Unfortunately some of the enquiries coming through my clients website started to fall into this category....and so we have no real way of measuring how much business he may have lost nor over what period of time.

Finding hidden resources

I have recently been working on a revamp of a website for a carpet and flooring retailer. One of the easiest ways to breathe new life into this site is to change the photos and graphics.

I contacted several of his key suppliers asking for promotional photos of their products which I could use on the site and they have been most obliging. I now have hundreds of professional photos and it has cost nothing but a little time sending the emails. In return I will simply link back to the supplier's website.

Using images on your website

Images are very important to the look and feel of a website. They help to break up the text and make the pages look more interesting. They can also convey their own message, e.g. a company slogan.

I enjoy choosing pictures for a website. Mind you, when I was working on the website for a lady supplying chocolate fountains the pictures were so good I just couldn't stop thinking about food.

There are millions of pictures "out there" on the internet, but make sure you have permission to use them before you include them in your site, otherwise you are infringing copyright laws. Some sites offer clipart and photographs which are free to use, others only require a link back to their site crediting them with the photograph. There are many professional sites too, e.g. Fotolia, where you can buy permission to use a photograph. The prices can start from just 50p.

Of course, with digital cameras it is now very easy to take your own photographs to use on your website. Think about the composition of your picture and keep the background plain.

The software I use allows me to work with the photographs so I can crop them, recolour them, add special effects etc but most importantly I need to resize and optimize the images so they are suitable for the internet. Large, detailed images can be so slow to load on a web page that you can lose your customer before the page is even loaded, they simply get fed up of waiting and click to go to another site.
